Genome Discovery Timeline
The NGRI course focuses on freshman and spans the entire freshman year.

How does the program work?
- In the GDEP program you will sign up for a two-semester discovery science course designed to give you an authentic research experience.
- The course is designed for new undergraduates.
- The class is limited to 20 students so apply today.
- It draws on themes and techniques from biology, microbiology, molecular biology, genomics and bioinformatics.
- Students Isolate and purify bacteriophage from the environment and characterize them using a variety of laboratory techniques including electron microscopy and DNA analysis.
- Each class chooses one purified DNA sample to send to the Joint Genome Institute for sequencing.
- Students download the genome sequence and use bioinformatics tools to identify genes and regulatory sequences (= genome annotation)
